MH370: We want them to come home

MH370: Six 'reasons' why plane vanished

Conspiracy theories have flourished in the six-month-old Malaysia Airline mystery, from the sinister to the far-fetched

Aviation experts believe that what happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 may never be proved - but that hasn't stopped a vocal global community of conspiracy theorists from trying.
Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished from radars, but in September last year, investigators and aviation experts admitted they remained in the dark about what exactly happened to the plane and why.
Malaysia's government released a statement formally declaring the crash of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 an accident on Thursday.
"The story is in stasis, and that's where it's likely to stay, probably for ever," said David Learmount, the operations and safety editor for the aviation website Flightglobal said at the time. "Getting used to that idea is the difficult bit."
Mr Learmount, a former Royal Air Force pilot, added: "One day, perhaps, some seat cushions will wash up on Australia's western coast or Antarctica's shore, but that won't help us find the wreck. I said in the beginning that we're unlikely ever to find the aircraft and that remains true."

Still, that hasn't stopped theories - often supported by not even the thinnest shred of solid evidence - from spreading.
There are more than 94,000 videos related to such theories on YouTube, many of which have been viewed tens or even hundreds of thousands of times.
Here are some of the most widely circulated theories:
1. SHOT DOWN
According to this theory, Flight 370 could have been shot down during a joint military exercise between the United States and Thailand in the South China Sea.
The theory is advanced in a book called Flight MH370: The Mystery by Nigel Cawthorne, a UK-based writer. The book describes the plane's disappearance as "the greatest mystery since the Mary Celeste" but suggests one possible explanation could be an accidental shoot-down.
"The drill was to involve mock warfare on land, in water and in the air, and would include live-fire exercises," Mr Cawthorne writes.
Relatives of those on board MH370 have criticised the book as premature and insensitive.
2. TERRORIST HIJACKING
With the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington approaching, conspiracy theorists have turned much of their focus to what some have dubbed the "9/11/14" theory.
This theory, again utterly devoid of proof but nonetheless widely circulated on the internet, suggests that Flight 370 did not crash but is in fact being prepared for use in a terrorist spectacular that will coincide with anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Among those throwing his weight behind this theory is Christopher Green from a group called "Alternative Media Television (AMTV)".
In one YouTube video, which has been viewed nearly 320,000 times, he suggest terrorists or even a rogue state might have hijacked Flight 370 and could now be "retrofitting this plane, arming it with a nuclear bomb for a later attack that could literally destroy and blow up an entire American city".
Mr Green accuses the media of being complicit "in the largest conspiracy that we have ever seen - the largest flight conspiracy since the September 11 terrorist attack."
3. MH17 PLANE SWITCH
The "plane switch" is among the most outlandish theories to have surfaced.
One of its main backers is Jim Stone, a self-described "independent journalist" whose website carries the motto: "Truth is reality, which lies and inventions fall to in the end."
Mr Stone proposes the theory that it was Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and not Flight 17 that was shot down over the Ukraine in July last year. He offers little in the way of explanation about who might benefit from switching the planes, or how they might have achieved it. Nor does he say what happened to the real MH17.
Nevertheless, he argues: "Flight 370 had to be gotten rid of, and people disposed of."
Somewhat confusingly, Mr Stone argues that the downed plane - which he refers to as MH17/370 - was actually shot down as part of a Mossad plot to hide "the dirty business" going on in Gaza.
Mr Stone also claims to have received "additional information" to suggest the recent plane crash which killed Eduardo Campos, the Brazilian presidential candidate, was "murder".
"They nailed both engines because the plane could fly with only one," he claims, again without real evidence.
4. ISLAND LANDING
In the days and weeks following the plane's disappearance one of the most commonly heard conspiracy theories was that it had landed on Diego Garcia, the British-owned island in the Indian Ocean that is home to a major US military base.
The theory gained so much traction that US officials were forced to deny it.
"There was no indication that MH370 flew anywhere near the Maldives or Diego Garcia. MH370 did not land in Diego Garcia," an official from the US embassy in Malaysia told that country's The Star newspaper.
Even so, that theory has not entirely gone away, not least in China home to 153 of Flight 370's passengers and many of the most vocal conspiracy theorists.
He Xin, a Chinese blogger, continues to insist that the MH370 mystery was the result of a CIA special operation to gain control of some "special person" or "special object" on the plane.
Mr He claims the plane was forced to land at Diego Garcia, which explains why relatives believed the mobile phones of their loved ones were still ringing in the hours following the plane's disappearance.
There, MH370 was dismantled inside an aircraft hanger before being burned and dumped in the sea, Mr He argues. Like others, he offers no proof.
5. THE UNKNOWN "WEAPON"
Mike Adams, a veteran conspiracy theorist who runs a website called the Natural News, is known for his bizarre and often ludicrous articles.
"There are some astonishing things you're not being told about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370," he wrote less than 48 hours after the disaster.
His explanation for how MH370 "utterly and inexplicably vanished"? Not a hijacking nor a mid-air explosion but possibly the work of "some entirely new, mysterious and powerful force" capable of plucking "airplanes out of the sky without leaving behind even a shred of evidence".
"If there does exist a weapon with such capabilities, whoever controls it already has the ability to dominate all of Earth's nations with a fearsome military weapon of unimaginable power," Mr Adams wrote.
"That thought is a lot more scary than the idea of an aircraft suffering a fatal mechanical failure."
6. AND FINALLY: REALITY CHECK
Despite all those theories, the reality is certainly more mundane, says Mr Learmount, the aviation expert. He is convinced that whatever happened to the plane was "a deliberate act by someone on board, probably the captain".
"I know people - especially journalists - would like this weird event to have more in common with Star Wars, but actually it was probably a carefully planned suicide and revenge attack," he said.
"But will we ever be able to prove that? No."

World Leaders Head Paris March Honoring Terror Victims

"No Fear!"  "Not Afraid!"
More than 1 million people -- including leaders from around the world -- today marched as part of "a cry for freedom" to honor those killed in this week's terror attacks in Paris.
The march began Sunday afternoon at the Place de la Republique, near the Charlie Hebdo offices where 12 people were killed Wednesday.
French officials say about 1.3 million people huddled in the windy streets -- some appearing solemn, some upbeat -- marching with French flags and "Je suis Charlie" -- "I am Charlie" -- signs. Some sang and clapped, and portions of the crowd spontaneously burst into applause as they marched.
It was the largest demonstration in French history, according to officials.
The march broke up into three sections -- one down Boulevard Voltaire, one down Rue Bastille, and the third down Rue Philippe Auguste. All three marches later reunited at Place de la Nation.
Cafes and bistros along the route overflowed with marchers who stopped to rest along the walk, some carrying handmade signs reading "No Fear" and "Not Afraid."
The march was a response to the massacre at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical weekly newspaper, and a subsequent pair of hostage situations Friday, one of which involved the suspected gunmen. Seventeen people were killed during the three days of violence.
French police say they took extra precautions during the march, with more than 2,000 officers in the area and another 2,000 officers and 1,000 soldiers stationed throughout Paris.
Gerard Araud, the French ambassador to the United States, told ABC News that it is "very likely" that the country will face more attempted terrorist attacks.
"We have to consider the threat that we are facing. You have in Europe thousands of young radicals -- thousands of them -- and of course, we are democracies and you don't arrest somebody because of his ideas," he said.

Araud called it a "very specific threat," noting the hundreds of Frenchmen who went to Syria or Yemen for military training with various extremist groups.
"We don't know when these people are coming back and whether they are coming back and we don't know when they're -- whether these radical people are going suddenly to become terrorists," he said. "So for the moment ... it's very likely, unfortunately, that we are going to face other attempts of terrorist acts."
World leaders in attendance included Germany's Angela Merkel, Britain's David Cameron, Italy's Matteo Renzi, Mariano Rajoy of Spain, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Ukraine PresidentPetro Poroshenko, and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.

" Religion for Peace and Freedom from Fear "

" Religion for Peace and Freedom from Fear "

Delievered by Sitagu Sayadaw
at Seminor Sitagu International Buddhist Academy and US commission on International Religious Freedom
Sitagu International Buddhist Academy
Sagaing Hills, Sagaing, Myanmar

Good morning Honorable gentlemen

Welcome to Sitagu International Buddhist Academy. I am glad to meet and to discuss with you.

There are six major Religions in the world today. Since Human beings came on Earth, people worshipped the Sun, the Moon and various deities. They also sought refuge in them on the basis of fear. It was called a primitive religion. Most of scholars stated that horror initiated the religions of those days. The Buddha also clearly said that the idea and concept of religions originated from fear. Therefore every religion has full responsibility for the removal of fear which is sticking on the mind of people. But, on the contrary, it is regrettable that a fearful religion and its followers emerged in the world.

After the primitive religions there appeared Hinduism. And afterwards, Jainism also came out on the Land where Hinduism was being flourished. Forty years after the emergence of Jainism, there appeared Buddhism also. Buddhism appeared on the birth place of Hinduism and Jainism and peacefully coexisted with them for ages. There was no traceable history of bloodshed and conflict among them. Also there was no violence and quarrel even on the statement issued by the Hindus saying that the Buddha was an incarnation of God Vishnu. We had only oral and written arguments.

Six hundred years after the Buddha, Jesus Christ appeared in the World. In the ten commandments of Christianity we find many similarities with Buddhism in the field of Morality and Noble practice. Christian missions tried to flourish their faith when they came to the East Asian countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Korea and Japan. The people of those countries were non-Christians. But, even after the arrival of Christianity also there was peaceful coexistence between Christians and non-Christians. No history of conflict can be traced to any side. Because all the Hindus, Janis and Christians are walking together on the common platform of their respective teachings, that is Morality, Loving-kindness and compassion. The religion, founded based on Loving-kindness and compassion, has no conflict and it does only social welfare services like Health, Education and other social infrastructures.

In Myanmar, many Christians converted to Buddhism in the past as well as at the present. They did it not because they were forced by the Buddhists. Similarly, many of Buddhists also converted to Christian faith. No single Christian threatened them to do so. They did it of their own free will. Every religion has and should have freedom of worship and freedom of belief. Look at the Crusade that prolonged about forty years. It was recorded in the history of the world.

We have to note that the beginning of conflict is aggressiveness and extremism either in the field of religion or that of politics. Today, in Iraq, the Islamic extremists are forcing ancient Zoroastrians to change their faith into Islam. They even threatened them to kill if their demand is not met. In Africa, a Muslim woman was given the death sentence just because she has converted to Christianity. Therefore, we, the East Asian Buddhist countries are living in constant daily fear of falling under the sword of the Islamic extremists. As we are lacking power and influence, we cannot compete against with the rapid growth of Islamic world.

There was a recorded history that in the thirteenth century A.D, a Muslim army marched from Turkey through India and destroyed Pala Buddhist dynasty and converted it into Islamic state. Pala Buddhist dynasty was none other than present Bangladesh. In the south of Philippine, the Islamic extremists revolted against the government for twenty years. Today, they established a Muslim state there. The Islamic extremists are holding weapons in the south of Thailand to make it a separate Muslim state.

Every religion, according to me, should perform its activities only for the good and welfare of the people. But, today, Islamic extremists are trying to establish Islamic states by waging war against non-Muslims. It is regrettable that they are performing the holy war (Jihad) on the name of God.

Myanmar regained its independence from British in 1948. They colonized Myanmar for nearly hundred years. Many Africans were imported as slaves when the United States of America was established. In the same way, the English rulers illegally imported labourers from India and Bangladesh to Myanmar for the hard labour during their rule.

There is also another bad consequence caused by English colonial rule. During hundred years of British rule, Burmese nationals were not formed as an army. But it was ridiculous that the English rulers administered Myanmar forming different groups of indigenous minorities as an army. When the British rulers went back to England, the minority groups revolted against the Burmese government. We cannot solve those problems until today. These are the natural sufferings faced by the colonial countries.

There is one more important thing that during the British colonial rule, many illegal immigrants from Bangladesh entered into the Rakhine state. In 1948-49, by the name of Mujtahid, those illegal immigrants revolted against Burmese army. Their intention was to establish separate Muslim state. Burmese army had to confront the Islamic Mujahidins. Today, they neither claim themselves as Bangalis nor claim Mujahidins. But, claiming themselves as Rohingars, they are trying to demand a separate home land. They also burned their houses by themselves as if it was done by Burmese Buddhists. We cannot compete with the Islamic world which is the second most powerful and wealthy. Islamic countries occupy the second largest portion even in the United Nations.

The mass media of today is also overwhelmed by the power of money. Most of mass communications such as radios and televisions are controlled by the Islamic world which has sound economy. As we are unable to fight against such a powerful media, the world is not ready either to believe or accept whatever we said. But, we were deafened by the loud explosion of the whole world when the Islamic world says something bad about Myanmar. It was the power of Islamic Medias that made the image and reputation of Myanmar bad. Therefore, we, as the Buddha taught, have determined to objectively care and protect our country and our nationality avoiding two extremes: favour and fear.

Honorable gentlemen — in conclusion, I would like to say that Myanmar is facing various problems and difficulties. Because it was under the colonial rule for nearly hundred years and even after the independence, it was fighting civil and communal war for nearly sixty years.
Many organizations from abroad came to Myanmar with the intention of solving such problems. But, instead of solving it, we found that they sometimes made the situation worse and worse. Therefore I would like to request you to find a better solution for such problems.

The next one, what I would like to say is that the Myanmar government is now trying to establish internal peace and stability with the intention of ceasing civil war and communal violence. At this crucial Juncture, some religious extremists are frustrating with provocative statements and actions. I would like to request you to give your hands in the process of solving problems and conflicts. A methodical approach is essential for the peace process. It is also necessary not to make things from bad to worse and more complicated.

As devout Buddhists, we also promise that we are going to solve these problems without violence and we will do it firmly standing on the teaching of the Buddha, that is tolerance, forgiveness, serving society, sacrifice for others and rationality.

Thank you all.
May you be happy and healthy.

THE ‘ROHINGYA’ - IDENTITY TRICK

August 22, 2013 at 2:59pm
# THE ‘ROHINGYA’ - IDENTITY TRICK
...................................................
# The Invention of the ‘ROHINGYA’ and the Manipulation of History and Facts

       # In 1960, the Mujahid insurgency was finally (but only temporarily) defeated by General Ne Win. Then the Muslim leadership realized that they needed a new story about the Muslims in Arakan - and they embraced a new identity - and they now called themselves ‘Rohingya’.
This new word helped to make it much easier to manipulate media and opinion. The terms Bengali-Muslim and Chittagong-Muslim indicate - quite obviously - that they came from outside Burma, and that they had roots in, Bengal or specifically the Chittagong area of Bengal. The term Rohingya carries no similar eaning, making it much easier to spread the ‘new history’ which now says that the Rohingya actually have been inhabitants of this land for a long long time. To dominate the region, they must become ‘indigenous residents’ of the region and they need that to be unquestionably accepted by the international community.

# Repeated lies become a false truth over time - it is happening now.
# The Rohingya and the pro-Rohingya groups will make these claims and others:
# Claim 1 -The Rohingya are Actually Indigenous to Arakan.
• Arakan has had a Buddhist identity (before that - Vedic/Hindu), verified by archaeology (royal capital cities, inscriptions on stone which lists kings and royal dynasties), artifacts, books and manuscripts, and many of these date back over 1000 years before Islam even existed.

• There is no archeological evidence of major Muslim cities, palaces, or large
population.
# Claim 2 - The Rohingya came from Muslim Persian, Turkish, and Bengali Traders,
Shipwrecked in the 7th century, on the Shores of Arakan.

• It was in the 13th century that the Bengal area and the Turkish lands even started to become Muslim. Bengal was mostly Buddhist for nearly 2000 years. Its last Buddhist dynasty - starting in the 8th century and known as the Pala Empire - weakened after the destruction of the famous ancient Buddhist university of Nalanda by Muslim invaders in the late 12th century and succumbed to the Muslim conquest in the 13th century, with large scale conversions starting, and continuing for centuries. Turkey started changing to Islam in the 13th century, and its Roman Empire capital of Constantinople (now Istanbul) fell to the Muslim armies in the 15th century. Non-Muslims were required to pay a ‘jiyza’ (tax) in order to remain non-Muslim. For a couple of centuries the majority of Persians were not Muslim, though they were ruled by the Arab Muslims.

• It is in the 7th century that Mohammed lived and Islam began - and Arakan was 5000 long miles away. The shipwreck stories are just that - stories. There is no evidence or correlating material. Around the world there are stories of shipwrecks and ship journeys - including the story of Noah’s Ark.

• Thus, it is abundantly clear that such statements as we have today, about Muslims arriving in Arakan in the 7th century, are undisputedly false, and impossible to be true. And, it verifies, again, the fact that the Rohingya and their supporters are engaged in putting out so much false media.

• It can even be said that if, indeed, sailors from those areas actually landed in Arakan, then they most certainly most certainly were not Muslim!

# Claim 3 - The language ‘Rohingya’ and the ‘Rohingya’ people originated and existed
long ago, in Arakan.
• The only old reference to ‘Rohingya’ is in a book printed in 1799 - A Comparative Vocabulary of Some of the Languages Spoken in the Burma Empire - by Francis Buchanan8. The Rohingya mention this book and quote one sentence, which they think validates their claims.

Much of the book deals with the four main languages of the Burma area - which include the Burmese and the Arakanese languages. Buchanan then mentions three small dialects, derived from the languages of the‘Hindu Nation’ (India), one of which he called ‘Rooinga’ which is spoken by ‘Mohammedans’ (Muslims) who live in Arakan.

# From the book:

• The proper natives of Arakan, call themselves Yakain, which name is also commonly given to them by the Burmas. (Yakain = Rakhine. Burmas = Burmese) The ‘proper natives’ is quite definitive.

• I shall now add three dialects, spoken in the Burma empire, but evidently derived from the language of the Hindu nation. (The Hindu nation = India, at that time British India, which included Bengal areas, but not Arakan.)

• The first is that spoken by the the Mohammedans, who have been long settled in Arakan, and who call themselves Rooinga, or natives of Arakan. (This is the one sentence that the Rohingya try to use to support their claims.) ‘long settled’ is vague. How long? 50 years? 100 years? However, it is clear what ‘long settled’ does NOT mean - it doesn’t mean ‘native’, or ‘proper natives’, or ‘indigenous’. And ‘settled’ means, came from somewhere else and settled here or there, though not long enough to be considered ‘native’.

Hence, the next sentence:

• Both these tribes, by the real natives of Arakan, are called Kulaw Yakain, or stranger Arakan. (Buchanan is referring to the ‘Mohammedans’ and the ‘Hindus’ when he writes: ‘Both these tribes’). Again, he recognizes that the Yakain (Rakhine) Buddhists are the ‘real natives’ which implies, ‘the mother culture’, and that the Muslims and Hindus are ‘outsiders’ or ‘strangers’ who use languages from India.

The adaptation of the term ‘Rohingya’ was a clever political move - to reinvent the history and claim a solid link to the land. However, the term ‘Rooinga’ or ‘Rohingya’ was not noted at all - during the following 150 years - in any other study or reference other than Buchanan’s book. This indicates that the term was so unimportant, and/ or the population of Muslims at that time was so small and insignificant, that perhaps Muslims in one town, or a small area, called themselves ‘Rooinga’, but other small communities of Muslims didn’t know that term. And, when the term was seemingly invented, or reinvented - in the 1950s, nobody knew it or recognized it, many even didn’t like it.

Most people in the world do not forget what they call themselves - The French didn’t forget that they were French and spoke French language, and the Chin didn’t forget that they are called Chin and spoke one or more Chin languages. However, the term ‘Rooinga’ was entirely forgotten for 150 years, since being briefly mentioned in Buchanan’s book. It was not mentioned by the Dutch, the Portuguese, the Chinese, the Indians, or the bureaucratic British.

The Muslims didn’t seem to use it, which means that it obviously was not an important word for them, they forgot about it, it was not used by the Bengal Muslims, not used by the Chittagong Muslims, not used by the Bengali V-force, not used by the Mujahid Party in 1948 when they gave an ultimatum to the government, and not used by the Mujahidin Army which launched a ‘jihad’ (holy war in the name of Allah) on Burma. It was not used by Bogyoke Aung San, and also not used by U Nu - who had many dealings with the Muslims of Burma.

• During the British colonial period the Muslims called themselves Bengali Muslims, or often more specifically, Chittagong Muslims.

• Buchanan’s book actually proves that the Bengali Muslims (Rohingya) are not indigenous to Arakan. Buchanan defined the Yakain (Rakhine) as the ‘native’ people of the land, and also, the ‘proper’ people.

• When ‘Rohingya’ started to be used, it was a new word for everybody - and it had a purpose - to turn attention away from the terms ‘Bengali Muslims’ or ‘Chittagong Muslims’ or ‘Arakan Muslim’ which clearly show the origins of the person in question.

If the word ‘Rohingya’ or ‘Rooinga’ existed long ago to describe those people why did they never use it?

# Claim 4 - Many Arakan Kings Were Muslim.
• It is rather absurd to claim that some Arakan Kings were actually Muslim. Some point to coins of a certain time that had a Persian script on them (4th coin below). But that does not prove the Kingdoms were Muslim at all. For some time the Arakan Kingdom included parts of Bengal (including the Chittagong area) which had become majority Muslim after q nearly 2000 year Buddhist history.

• Persia was defeated and occupied by the Muslim Arab armies in the 7th century, but, only an estimated 10% of the Persian population became Muslim at that time. The conversion to Islam was very gradual in Persia, and took a couple of centuries - during which time more than a millenium of Buddhist history. Having the Persian script on the coins gave the Buddhists more legitimate rule over the Muslims.

• Also, concerning the coins - consider that U.S. one dollar bills have Latin phrases, Roman numerals, an Egyptian pyramid and the ‘Eye of Horus’ on them. Chinese money has five languages on them: Chinese Mandarin, Tibetan, Mongolian, Zhuang, and the Muslim minority Uigher language - and, in addition, has Western numbers - and China clearly is not beholden to any one of those cultures. Hilltribe people in many areas of Southeast Asia still have and value old British Indian Rupees. Even North Korean and Iranian money has some English and western numbers. So, the appearance of other languages on a country’s currency does not necessarily show power or influence of those other entities.

JIHAD IN THAILAND: MUSLIM TERRORISTS CREATE ARSON TSUNAMI IN SOUTH THAILAND

Yala

Violence and chaos hit deep southern provinces Friday, with a corporal killed in Yala and arson attacks in Yala, Pattani and Songkhla provinces.

Pattani

Violence and chaos hit deep southern provinces Friday, with a corporal killed in Yala and arson attacks in Yala, Pattani and Songkhla provinces.

These horrible reports from Chai, our man in Thailand, are coming in daily now. Brutal, vicious, relentless, and yet we hear nothing in the media ...... Ramadan Mubarak, indeed.
One solder killed and seven others injured in bomb blast, Friday, August 2, 2013 after a night of arson and explosions (here).

Today is Friday, the Muslim 'Holy Day'. A great many non-Muslim businesses in Thailand's south shut down every Friday to comply with the Muslim terrorists' demands that all businesses close for the Muslim holy day: whether the businesses are owned by Muslims or not.

The price for not shutting down is becoming too dear to pay, so many Buddhist businesses shut down not out of respect, but out of fear. Atlas Shrugs covered this economic terrorism most recently with your story 'THAILAND: JIHADISTS DEMAND ALL BUSINESSES CLOSE EVERY FRIDAY'http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2012/09/thailand-jihadists-demand-all-businesses-close-every-friday.html

For about twenty Buddhist-owned businesses that didn't shut down last week, yesterday was the last time they will ever open.

Last night Muslim terrorists started burning Buddhist businesses that normally remain open on Friday. So far the newspaper stories say a dozen businesses were burned last night, but the radio news reports double that number including factories and small family owned shops. In Thailand the newspapers always seem to take a while to catch up to the radio news that is more immediate.

This is another major strategic attack, coming the day after so many bombings and shootings in the South that were obviously coordinated to take place on the same day.

The exodus of Buddhists from the southern provinces continues. No doubt another dozen families and businesses that were victims of last night's terror attacks will be heading north soon. It's easy to leave when you have nothing left.

Here is the latest online news story, but again it should be noted that the radio news is reporting double the number of arsons throughout the southern provinces:

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/362709/12-fires-set-in-far-south

12 fires set in far South
Published: 2 Aug 2013 at 09.57

At least 12 fires broke out at private businesses in Yala, Songkhla and Pattani provinces early Friday, causing no casualties but raising suspicion of arson by militants.

The first blaze was reported to Yala’s Muang police station about 3am, after a fire broke out at Teck Bee Hang Co in tambon Thasarb of Muang district. Police and fire fighters went to the factory, where they found the blaze had originated in a warehouse storing rubber blocks, behind the main factory. Five fire trucks were called in, and it took almost three hours to control the fire.

The second case was reported at 3.15am at the same police station, reporting a fire at the base of a mobile phone signal pole on Road 409, also in tambon Thasarb.

Five minutes later, Muang police station was notified about a fire at P Parawood Co, in tambon Sateng of Muang district. Five fire trucks were sent to the scene and brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes.

About the same time, a fire broke out at Yala Tharnthong Co in tambon Budi, another rubberwood factory. The fire caused minor damage as workers were able to control it before it spread.

At 3.40am, Lam Mai police station in Muang district received a report of a fire that set ablaze a forklift and trucks inside a factory producing rubber inner tubes.

Fire minutes later, also in Lam Mai, a fire was discovered at Union Plastic LP. The fire began inside the company's facilities, but fire fighters were able to control the blaze, with only minor damage reported.

Meanwhile, police also received reports of three fires in separate locations in Songkhla province, two at furniture shops in Thepha district and one in Saba Yoi district.

Another three fires were reported at shops in Pattani province - two in Khok Pho district and one in Nong Chik district.

None of the fires resulted in death or serious injury, police reported. Officers said they suspected that all the incidents were the act of arsonists involved in the violence in the deep South.

Egypt: Security forces abandon Coptic Christians during deadly attack in Luxor

On 5 July 2013, four Coptic Christian men were killed by local residents in the Nagah Hassan district of Dab’iya village, some 18 kilometres west of Luxor.

© Amnesty International

Security forces stood by and failed to intervene during a brutal attack on Coptic Christians in Luxor, Amnesty International said in a briefing published today. During the sectarian violence, security forces left six besieged men –four of whom were then killed and one hospitalized – to the mercy of an angry crowd.

In an attack lasting 18 hours on 5 July, four Coptic Christian men were killed and four others were seriously injured. An angry mob armed with metal bars, knives, tree branches and hammers attacked Christian homes and businesses in Nagah Hassan, 18 km west of Luxor, after the dead body of a Muslim man was discovered near the homes of Christian families. Despite local residents’ and religious leaders’ repeated calls for help, security forces on the scene made only half-hearted attempts to end the violence and sufficient reinforcements failed to arrive.

“It is outrageous that this attack was left to escalate unhindered in this way. Amnesty International has documented a series of cases in the past where Egypt’s security forces used unnecessary force or live fire during demonstrations, yet in this case they held back even though people’s lives were threatened,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Deputy Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Programme.

“A thorough, impartial and independent investigation must be conducted into the events in Luxor and the grossly inadequate response of the security forces to the attack.”

The violence began at 3am, shortly after the Muslim man was found dead in the vicinity of Christian homes. His family blamed the death on a local Coptic Christian. By mid-day more than 100 Christian homes had been attacked, with scores of them looted or torched. Local residents reported calling the police and army’s hotlines throughout the day in vain. Local religious leaders also approached other security officials.

“The attack went on for 18 hours, and there was not a door on which I did not knock: police, army, local leaders, the Central Security Forces, the Governorate. Nothing was done,” said Father Barsilious, a local priest from Dab’iya.

In one incident, security forces evacuated women and children trapped inside a house surrounded by an angry mob but left six men behind, apparently following demands from the crowd that the men remain. Four of the abandoned men were later stabbed and/or beaten to death and another required hospital treatment. Three other Christian men were hospitalized in separate violent incidents. One woman said she had begged police officers to save her sons who were left behind, but they ignored her pleas:

“I kissed the police officer’s hands and legs and begged him to protect my two sons and take them out… he completely ignored me and said he would only take women and children…. I buried my two sons in one day,” she said.

Other female relatives said they had given men their abayas (gowns) to try to disguise them as women so that they could escape.

Discrimination against Coptic Christians has been prevalent in Egypt for decades. Under President Hosni Mubarak at least 15 major attacks on Copts were documented. Sectarian violence continued under the Supreme Council of Armed Forces and following the election of President Mohamed Morsi. At least six attacks on Coptic churches or buildings took place in 2013 during the final months of deposed President Mohamed Morsi’s administration.

Investigations by the Luxor prosecution are ongoing. At least 18 men remain detained on charges of murder, attempted murder, destruction of property and ‘thuggery’, amid reports that some were beaten by security forces upon arrest.

“The continued sectarian violence in Egypt is an irremovable stain on the record of successive governments which have repeatedly failed to end attacks on minorities. Immediate steps must be taken to ensure the safety of Coptic Christians and other minorities,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Deputy Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Programme.

“The latest attacks will test the new Egyptian authorities’ political will and their ability to break the pattern of inaction and injustice once and for all.”

Some 100,000 Christians killed per year over faith, Vatican says

Christians Targeted in Deadly Egypt Blast
A car exploded last November in front of a Coptic Christian church in Alexandria, Egypt, as worshipers emerge from a New Year's Mass, killing more than 20 people and prompting a clash with Muslims at a nearby mosque

A staggering 100,000 Christians are killed annually because of their faith, according to the Vatican -- and several human rights groups claim such anti-Christian violence is on the rise in countries like Pakistan, Nigeria and Egypt.
"Credible research has reached the shocking conclusion that an estimate of more than 100,000 Christians are violently killed because of some relation to their faith every year," Vatican spokesman Monsieur Silvano Maria Tomassi said Tuesday in a radio address to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
"Other Christians and other believers are subjected to forced displacement, to the destruction of their places of worship, to rape and to the abduction of their leaders, as it recently happened in the case of Bishops Yohanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yaziji, in Aleppo [Syria]," Tomassi said.
While several human rights groups could not comment specifically on the Vatican's number, organizations, like Persecution.Org, said the persecutions of Christians have been on the rise in places like Africa and the Middle East over the last decade.
"Two-hundred million Christians currently live under persecution. It’s absolutely on the rise," Jeff King, the group's president, told FoxNews.com.
"It’s easing in the old Communist world and it's rising in the Islamic world," King said, noting in particular countries like Egypt, Pakistan and Nigeria. King said that the first major killing spree in recent years happened between 1998 and 2003, when he claims 10,000 Christians were murdered in Indonesia alone during those years.
Last March, a Nigerian Christian leader was killed when suspected Muslim militants burst into his home and shot him. Two members of Islamic militant group Boko Haram shot Faye Pama Mysa, a Pentecostal pastor and secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria, in his home Wednesday, according to multiple reports. The killing happened just after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency because of ongoing attacks in Africa's most populous nation.
King spoke of another example in which young Christian girls were forced into sex slavery in Bangladesh. More than 140 children were rescued from Islamic training centers over the last year -- with the majority of girls being targeted because of their religion, according to King.

John Eibner, CEO of Christian Solidarity International, has raised grave concerns over what he calls "religious cleansing" in Syria.
"Religious minorities are under constant threat in Syria," Eibner told FoxNews.com. "If things continue as they have been for the past two years in Syria, with an increase in religious cleansing, it's reasonable to think that there will be no more Christian communities or other religious minorities in the near future."
"Anti-Christian violence is on the increase throughout the world, especially throughout North Africa and the Middle East," he added. "It's hard for me to say with precision what the numbers are, but without doubt anti-Christian violence is on the increase."
Dinah Pokempner, general counsel for Human Rights Watch, was not able to independently verify the Vatican's figure, but said, "I think there’s little doubt that every week, every day, someone in the world is being persecuted – even to the point of losing their life – based on their religion."
"Persecution is a daily event on the basis of religion," Pokempner said. "This persecution affects Christians just as it does Muslims, Jews, Bahá'ís and people of other faiths."
A spokesman with the Vatican could not be immediately reached for comment.
Jane Zimmerman, the U.S. State Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, said in a statement that: "While I’m unfamiliar with the methodology that was used to reach that number, we have certainly followed numerous cases in recent years in which Christians and others of many faiths have been attacked or killed on account of their religious beliefs."
"Whatever the numbers, no one should die for professing or practicing their faith, whatever that faith is," Zimmerman told FoxNews.com. "The United States firmly supports the freedom to profess and practice one’s faith, to believe or not to believe, and to change one’s beliefs. As Secretary Kerry said on May 20, religious freedom 'is a birthright of every human being.'"
