IT WAS a moment nine year old Sophie McNally will never forget
when she presented a bouquet of flowers to Burmese pro-democracy leader
Aung San Suu Kyi during her recent visit to Ireland. Sophie who is from
Loughshinny and a pupil at St Brendan's National School, was delighted
to join Bob Geldof, Roger Moore and Bono on the red carpet for the
centre piece event of the political activist's whistle stop visit to
Dublin. It was a showery evening in Dublin but Sophie didn't let that
dampen her spirits. Originally, she was was supposed to be part of a
guard of honour to welcome Ms Suu Kyi to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre.
However, Sophie jumped at the chance to present the Nobel laureate with
the bouquet. Sophie's dad, Edward, said she was 'over the moon' and
having appeared on television that evening added that for his daughter
it was ' like being in Hollywood'. Edward said he was 'very proud' of
his daughter.
