Olympic gossip: who will light the London flame? Will medal hope Idowu be fit?
BOXING legend Muhammad Ali and Nobel prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi have
been approached about taking part in the opening ceremony of the
Olympics, says The Daily Telegraph.
The paper says that they, along with other celebrities, have been asked
about their availability on July 27. Ali is no stranger to the Olympics
and lit the flame at the 1996 Atlanta Games, he will also be in London
two days before the event. The paper says it is still not clear who will
light the cauldron this time round but says plans are at "an advanced
stage".
WILL PHILLIPS IDOWU BE FIT FOR OLYMPICS?
UK athletics coach Charles van Commenee says he has no idea if triple-jumper Phillips Idowu will be fit to take part in the Olympics, despite including him in the track-and-field team for the Games. He said he had been "too busy" to ask about his health after the athlete picked up a foot injury last month, reported the Daily Mail. The paper explains that the two men fell out badly last year and Idowu branded Van Commenee a "liar" on Twitter, he then refused to shake his hand at the World Championships in Korea.
CHAMBERS IN, MEADOWS OUT AS TEAM GB UNVEILED
The athletes who will represent Team GB in track-and-field events at the Olympics have been announced. Gold medal hope Jessica Ennis, who was called 'fat' by an official earlier this year, has been selected for both the heptathlon and 100m hurdles. Former drugs cheat Dwain Chambers and teen sensation Adam Gemili, at 18 the youngest member of the squad, were both selected to compete in the 100m sprint. In a controversial move, Lynsey Sharp was selected ahead of former world championship bronze medallist Jenny Meadows for the 800m, even though Sharp has not run the A standard qualifying time.
VAN COMMENEE TO QUIT IF TEAM GB FLOPS
Charles van Commenee, the head of UK Athletics, has said he will quit if the London 2012 track-and-field team fails to achieve the goal of eight medals, including one gold, this summer. Despite controversy over some of his picks the coach said he was "comfortable" with his decisions. However, Van Commenee, who has been in charge since 2009, said that if the athletes failed to perform, he would "lead by example" and step down. ·
