Gov’t calls for calm after clashes in western Myanmar kill 9, wound a dozen

YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar’s government has urged people to obey the law after clashes in a western state home to sectarian tension left nine people dead and a dozen injured.
The information ministry’s website posted the appeal Monday after two violent incidents in Rakhine State.

Residents said at least nine people were killed Sunday when Buddhist ethnic Rakhine residents attacked and burned a bus carrying Muslims from Taunggup in the west of the state. The reason was unclear, though sectarian tension in the state is longstanding.

Separately, at least a dozen people were wounded in the state capital Sittwe when police opened fire on a mob of about 100 people attacking their station. They were demanding the release of a man they believed was arrested in a market dispute.
