Bangladeshi border guards intercept Muslims fleeing Burma

Bangladeshi border guards have pushed back boatloads of people fleeing the violence in western Burma. [ABC]

Bangladesh border guards have pushed back eight boats carrying more than 300 Rohingya Muslims, fleeing religious violence in western Burma.

Shafiqur Rahman, a major in the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) force says the boats were carrying mostly women and children.

"There were more than 300 Rohingya in the boats which are coming from the Myanmar [Burma] city of Akyab." he said.

"They were carrying mainly Rohingya women and children, many of whom were crying and looked extremely anxious."

"All eight boats have been pushed back to Myanmar territory.
